11:40 PM. Private detective Sam Cortez is covering his typewriter when Vivian Crest walks in out of the rain and hires him to find her husband, missing three days. Sam asks four plain questions and catches four plain lies: the car he supposedly took is parked outside because she drove it here, she can't name the bag he supposedly packed, and she keeps saying 'lived' when a hopeful wife would say 'lives.' He tells her the obvious truth — her husband isn't missing, he left, and she knows exactly where he is. She doesn't blink: she needs a licensed detective's report saying he's gone, in writing, for the lawyer and the settlement. Sam rolls a form into the typewriter and takes the case at his usual terms. Half in advance.
