2:07 AM. Dana took the trash to the chute in her pajamas and the door of 3C swung shut behind her — keys, wallet, and phone all inside. Marv, the night locksmith her neighbor's buzzer summoned, charges one-eighty after midnight and has one rule: he doesn't open a door for anyone who can't prove it's theirs. Everything that proves it's hers is on the other side of it. So Marv makes her an offer no ID can match: describe, exactly, what he's going to see when the door opens. She gives him a dead fern she still waters, a light switch that does nothing, and a cat named Brooklyn who will be sitting on the mat, refusing to come out. He picks the lock. The door opens on every detail, the cat staring up at them both. She pays him from the drawer she said the money was in, and he tapes the receipt to the fern.
